New Photography from Iran

  • Photo Narges Naderinejad

  • Photo Narges Naderinejad

  • Photo Alireza Moradzadeh

  • Here at LIF, we are excited to offer a selection of fresh visual perspectives from several talented Iranian photographers. Their vibrant images show us everyday complexities as well as spectacular entanglements in modern-day Iran. The majority of photographers selected for this exhibition are women and their artful energy brings us close to the country as they experience it, rather than how it is ‘reported on’ by outsiders looking in.

  • Wynne Neilly Transition

    Photo Wynne Neilly

  • Neilly is a Canadian photographer whose images detail his ongoing transition within a spectrum of genders.

LIF will exhibit a self-portrait project that documents Neilly’s journey from female to “male” through weekly photographs. With the use highly personal portraiture and editorial work,Wynne reflects his developing identity and some unexpected permutations of human gender expression. He insists on the use of quotation marks around the word “male” stating that his identity is something fluid that cannot be easily defined by use of a single word.

  • “Neilly maintains that nothing about his work or his transition has concluded. Instead, these photos are meant to show only a moment in his life — not a finite experience.“Refinery29

“Art can help create a common ground and an accessible platform for which mainstream society can connect with and better understand queer and trans identities.”Huffington Post

  • Jorge Amestar The Crowd

    Photo Jorge Armestar

  • In stark B & W, photographer Jorge Armestar portrays high party peaks but also endless waking nightmares and dejection after the revelling is over. Armestar stalked around countless Spanish festivals to create a visually astounding collection of human transcendence and the bleakness that can follow. Raw, real and yet surreal, his photographs capture the energy that flows in and around festival hordes and the individuals comprising them.

  • Willem Jonkers & Sandra Jonkers

    Photo Willem Jonkers

  • LIF is eager to exhibit work from a wife-and-husband duo who have taken on the streets of Rotterdam together – with their camera.

  • “After a experiencing a rather complicated life, I found my peace, together with my wife, Sandra, when we moved to Rotterdam early in 2005. Together we took on street photography (how awesome is that, to share this with your spouse). What street photography is exactly, I cannot define. I just like photographing people on the streets – people that would otherwise not be noticed, like most of us.” Willem Jonkers Huffington Post

  • Caue Ito The Aftermath of War

    Photo Caue Ito

  • Caue Ito is a Brazilian photographer/cinematographer based in São Paulo city. Ito’s photographs of the aftermath of war in both Syria and Iraq will be on display at LIF. This exhibition confirms Ito as a talented creator of striking landscape photography. His work conveys the devastating paralysis of countries after conflict. Its uncanny images force us to admit that the scale of the scars can extend beyond even the scale of our bombs.

  • The Pavement Era of the Helsinki Elk People

LIF is very proud to present “The Pavement Era of the Helsinki Elk People”. This project showcases an inventive extension of street photography. Sometimes what we happen upon in Scandinavian streetscapes ferments into miles more than our conservative expectations. In this exhibition, pedestrian street photography has collided with highly speculative pre-history scholarship to form a parallel parodic cosmos.
